How Much Should I Pay My Cleaner?

When a homeowner has a good cleaner they brag about it to their friends and relatives. Yet the skill of a good cleaner is still not valued. Most people don't understand how much they should pay to have a professional cleaner clean their property.

The cost involved with domestic cleaning is a difficult hurdle. Most people want to spend the least amount as possible for the clean, but if the cleaner is not allowed the Time to clean the property thoroughly, then the quality is poor and the homeowner is usually unhappy with the results.

Like a hairdresser or plumber a cleaner is a professional business person. They work for themselves and are dependent on the money they earn to live. If they don't do a great job they don't get referrals for more work. Therefore a cleaner who has been in the industry working for themselves for many years, will be a great cleaner.

That still doesn't stop people wanting to pay as little as possible to have their home cleaned. It is not a job they want to do themselves but they can't see that it requires any skill. People will tell you anyone can clean, and many people who are out of work believe that. They quite often become a cleaner while trying to find a "proper job".

Cleaning is an "Art". Gone are the days when it didn't really matter whether you did a good job or not. Homes have new surfaces that need special care. Many products on the market are not suitable for certain areas. Bathrooms are expected to sparkle and shine. So there is a certain expertise required with a cleaner's ability.

Cleaning has been around since people lived in a shelter for more than one day. Even cave people would have swept out the dust to make the place comfortable. Dust floats in the air. It eventually falls down and rests on food, bedding and rocks that would have been used as furniture. Although it might have been dark in the cave the dust would have been felt and tasted if eaten, so keeping the dwelling free of dust would have been part of life even during those days.

Cleaning a home is a never ending job. You no sooner finish and make the place look wonderful and it starts getting dirty again. Because of this, it is frustrating and annoying. Most people hate the fact that they have to constantly clean to keep their home looking smart. If they could leave it and have someone else do the work they would.

But there is no such thing as magic, or a fairy coming in and doing the cleaning during the night. Although there are many implements on the market to help get through the job as quickly and as easily as possible, nothing replaces a person doing the cleaning.

Hundreds of years ago when wealthy people had large houses they used people from their local village to keep their house clean. These people usually became servants of the manor, and were fed and looked after, but rarely paid. If they were paid the amount received was small. Even the Romans used the people from the countries they had conquered as servants in their homes.

Over the years cleaning has been carried out by servants, people considered to be part of the lowest strata of the household; people who could easily be replaced and in the eyes of the homeowner a person who should consider themselves lucky to be looked after by the wealthy.

Early in the twentieth century this started to change. As more and more industries were established and people who worked for factories and large retail stores were paid to work, the supply of people ready to work for nothing in large houses dried up. This meant people with large homes who required people to come and clean had to start paying for the privilege. Obviously if it has never cost you anything before why would you want to pay much for that service? And so, people employed to keep houses clean were older women or young girls who couldn't get jobs else where.
